Meet The Locals Vol.10
Follow the sweet aroma beyond the shrine path.
Haruka Hara Owner Usagiiro
As you walk along the approach, you might notice a gentle sweet scent in the air.
That’s where you’ll find Usagiiro, a cozy confectionery shop opened in 2024.
We spoke with owner Haruka Hara about her passion for creating sweets loved by both locals and travelers.
A Shop for Everyday Life
Usagiiro is not just for tourists.
It’s a place where locals can stop by regularly — a rare presence in a tourist town like Kotohira.
The Meaning Behind the Name
“The name comes from rabbits—my husband was born in the Year of the Rabbit. We wanted something cute and easy for families to remember.”
“It also represents hope—that everyone connected to the shop can ‘leap forward’ like a rabbit.”
Why Kotohira?
“I’m originally from Osaka, but Kotohira is small and full of history and culture. Because it’s compact, people know each other—it feels warm and welcoming.”
What Makes It Special
One of Usagiiro’s signature elements is homemade white bean paste.
“We start from raw beans—separating skin and paste before cooking. Very few places go this far.”
Every detail reflects care and dedication.
Philosophy
“We simply want to create truly delicious sweets and be loved by the local community.”
Looking Ahead
“We want more people to discover us, and to continue as a shop loved for years to come.”
They also plan to expand souvenirs and create a relaxing space for visitors after their shrine walk.
Final Thoughts
Usagiiro is a place where everyday life and travel meet.
One bite carries warmth, care, and memory.
If you visit Kotohira, follow the sweet scent—you might just find your new favorite place.
