Kotohira-gu Shrine
A historic Shinto shrine enshrined on Mount Zōzu in Kotohira Town, Kagawa Prefecture.
Kotohira-gu Shrine, affectionately known as “Konpira-san,” is dedicated to Ōmononushi-no-Kami and Emperor Sutoku.
Since ancient times, it has been worshipped as a guardian deity of agriculture, industry, medicine, and maritime safety.
Throughout the year, Shinto priests and shrine maidens carry out a variety of rituals and festivals within the shrine grounds.
Famous highlights include the sacred treasure of the main hall, the “Yellow Amulet of Happiness,” the Ohitō-sama of the annual grand festival, the Shoin Hall with fusuma paintings by Maruyama Ōkyo (Important Cultural Property), traditional kemari performances (Intangible Folk Cultural Property), the 785 stone steps leading from the town to the Main Shrine, and the beloved Konpira Dogs.
Further up the mountain, at the 1,368th stone step, stands the Inner Shrine (Okusha), Izutama Shrine, dedicated to Izutamahiko-no-Mikoto, founder of the Konpira faith.
